More free games!

I've found a few more games available for download. Kind of a long list. Hope it helps make up for the lack of work I've been doing lately.

WurmOnline - Java based, stand alone. Now saying "java based" probably turned a lot of you off (it sure did me). But this game is incredible. Really, the graphics are amazing and there is a lot to it aside from "kill and level". There's also mining, wood cutting, building your own farm/house. Really quite impressive game. Check it out. Beta.

Rakion - Medieval death-match type game. Also has team death-match, "golem" matches, and stages for co-op. Action oriented. Only problem is a lot of rooms are plagued by lag. The game is free, kind of. Once you get to level 15 you can't spend any of your improvement points unless you pay for the game. But you can still buy better armor and whatnot. So after level 15 try to play with other free players.

Turf Battles - Slick MMORPG. Kind of laggy, but otherwise decent.

WarRock - Military FPS with vehicles that needs some serious work. Has problem with lag and hackers. Arcade, not realistic. Beta.

Digital Paintball 2 - Paintball FPS.

Starseige: Tribes - Anyone who's been gaming for awhile has probably heard of Tribes. The original Tribes as well as Tribes 2 have been released for free. The problem with Tribes 2 is they ran out of CD keys for all the free players, rendering the fact that it's free to download useless. This link is for the original that does not require a CD key.

Nexuiz - Death-match FPS. Laggy as hell. Not a lot of people are playing.

Alien Arena - Death-match FPS.

Purge Jihad - FPS/RPG. Free... kind of. If you don't register (pay) for the game, you can only play as 4 of the 8 classes. Another problem: nobody plays. So get your friends gathered if you want to start up a game of this.

All of these games and more can be found in our free online gamelist.

Silkroad Online

I've found what I would call one of the best free MMORPG's you can find. This game has a large banner right on the main site declaring "Free to play forever" and I don't know why considering it's got gorgeous graphics, fun game-play, and a very original skill system.

Read more about this amazing FREE game.

SilkRoad Online. I hadn't heard about it until about a month ago. I found it entirely on accident. I went looking for free MMORPG's like a usually do every so often and found someone state on a forum "This game is great. Very large community, great graphics, and very little lag!" and I found myself thinking "Large community and little lag? HA! Only fools would fall for that." and so I clicked the link... *cough* anyways, turns out the guy was right. It has a HUGE community, quite possibly the largest community for a free MMORPG I've ever seen, yet I never heard of the game? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH IT?

I'll get the bad points out of the way first. Camera system. Ugh. Another "click to move, rotate 3D camera to see where you're going, and try not to miss the click when you attack an enemy." Why is Korea pumping out so many games with this control scheme? It sucks.

The game is entirely translated to English, but poorly. It makes for some humorous dialog with NPC's, but more often than not it makes quests a bit harder than they should be because you find yourself saying "Wait, what do they want me to do? Find the trees of tree like movement in the trees? WHAT?" Luckily this does not happen very often.

The game is far from completed. They have plans for different races (Chinese, European, Middle-Eastern) but only have Chinese implemented. The game world is QUITE large, but apparently small in comparison to their grand plans.

These problems aside, I still say this is the best MMORPG you're money can't buy. So I guess I should start telling you why.

The main and obvious reason is the amazing graphics. All screen-shots you see here are at "Medium" detail level because my computer can't handle "High" detail level. It can do it, just at a terrible frame rate. And unlike most free games, changing the graphic quality between low, medium, and high actually makes a large difference. Aside from the three presets there's also the ability to customize it all you want. So what you see here is Medium detail, but with the Volume Effect enabled. Looks pretty damn good to me and runs fantastically.

The audio is very good. The music and ambiance are very well done and fit the game quite nicely. The actual combat sounds are brutal. You actually get the feeling you just mangled some poor monsters face with your weapon. Definitely preferable over the generic "swish slash" you hear in most freebies.

Now let's get into the meat of it. What the game is all about. You create your character (Male or Female. Face. Body type. Armor type. Weapon type.) start playing the game and collect both Experience points (for leveling up your character) and Skill points (for leveling up your skills). Now you might have noticed I skipped classes. That's because there are none. The game is very open ended as far as what type of character you want to create. You can make a character focused entirely on magic attacks, or one focused on physical attacks, or a nice mix. The choice is yours. I would suggest making a character that you don't plan on using first. This way you can try out different things and decide what you like best. It's what I did because I didn't quite understand the way the skill system worked, and once I made a second character I understood it perfectly.

You get five weapon types to choose from: Spear, Glave, Blade, Sword, and Bow. Each weapon has it's own stats. The spear is more magical than the glave. The blade more magical than the sword. The bow pretty much relies on whatever you do.

There's a gage on the top left, it has 5 balls that fill over time. Once the fifth ball fills, a sixth one will appear on fire. Once this happens you can press TAB and go into Beszerker Mode where you take less damage and deal out more damage. It's a nice little bonus that you never find yourself relying on, since it takes so long to refill.

Oh and large community? You better believe it. This is just the newbie city on one of the three servers. But even with all these people lag is minimal on a broadband connection.

Few other screens...
Combat
Snow
Waterfall

So that's it, get your copy of this game as soon as possible.

Xbox 360 has launched

Well, the Xbox 360 has launched. What do I think? *yawn* I think I'll be more interested once The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion comes out in a couple of weeks. For now the launch titles are pretty weak. But sales for the Xbox 360 have gone great, with most retailers not having enough supplies for the demand. The most exciting game at launch to me has to be Perfect Dark: Zero. But it isn't enough for me to throw down $450 for game and console. And if you do get an Xbox 360, for God sakes do NOT purchase the $300 "core" package. It doesn't have a hard drive. Memory cards are $35 and to get the hard drive alone costs $100. HMMM! Do yourself a favor and get the $400 deal, or you'll kick yourself hard down the road. Me? I'm waiting to see the PS3's launch lineup. Whichever console has the best games gets my money.

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland

Tony Hawks American Wasteland

For the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube game consoles.

PRICE: $49.99
By Neversoft and Activision
Rated T for Teen

I've always been a fan of the Tony Hawk skating games. From Tony Hawk 1 to Tony Hawk Underground, I've owned them all. I skipped Tony Hawks Underground 2 because it looked like a cartoon version of the first Underground. I had no interest in playing the same game. So when I heard they were making another Tony Hawk game I thought "Why should I care, there isn't a whole lot more they can do with the series." until I saw a video of the game-play online. It all looked like yet another Tony Hawk game until the character got off his board "Underground did that, who cares?" and got on a bike "Woah, wait, what?" then started going over a gigantic level that never seemed to stop "Ok, so it's different."I went out and bought the game with the mentality "They can't ruin it, it should be as good as Underground at least." and sure enough, it beat the shit out of Underground. Tony Hawks American Wasteland is by far the best Tony Hawk game out to date. With a ton of features to boot.

-Create a skater
-Create a skate park
-BMX riding
-No loading
-2 play modes: Story and Classic
-Money for buying Clothes, Haircuts, Skate gear, and Tattoos in the story mode
-2 player co-op for Classic Mode
-Much more

A few of these I'll explain. You may have seen the ads on TV that really push the "No loading" end of things. Well it's true, after the initial load screen you will never see another load screen again. However if you are a savvy gamer, you will figure out when it does most of its loading. You wont notice it, but you'll think "AH! I bet it's loading the next area now..." You'll know what I mean if you ever try the game out. And (as I stated) if you're a savvy enough gamer.

Now I can't remember if it's called the "Freak-out meter" or the "Flip-out meter" but either way it's a fairly simple but entertaining addition. When you're in a huge combo and face plant yourself, you can turn it in for a few points. As your character picks him/herself up you can start jamming a button that will slowly fill a gage that has a few lines on it. Each line the meter fills will be a different way for your skater to freak-out. Such as kicking the board away, picking the board up and chucking it half-way across the map, or breaking the board over your head. I think there are six different ways to freak out in total. As I stated "simple but entertaining".

The story mode is similar to that of Undergrounds. You're an up and coming skater that needs to prove himself to be the best. Along the way you get challenged by all sorts of different famous skaters like Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Bam Margera, and even one of the original Z-boys Tony Alva. Plus many more. This all takes place in L.A. The game also comes with a Classic mode that makes it feel more like a Tony Hawks Pro-skater game, making you collect the letters S-K-A-T-E and breaking hi-scores to advance.

Overall the graphics are fantastic in American Wasteland. Character models look like improved versions found in Underground 1. Gone are the cartoon visuals found in Underground 2 (thank God). Textures could be improved, but how much time do you find yourself looking at the paint job on a house in skating games?

The sound effects are pretty much the same as usual, but that does not disappoint at all. The music is a mixed bag, but you can change up the soundtrack for your own taste. Personally I turned off all the Hip-hop tunes and stuck with more of a punk rock soundtrack. If you get this for Xbox you can set it up with your custom soundtracks. If you own both a PS2 and Xbox don't pull a Tom and forget about custom soundtracks. It's important, especially if you dislike half the songs in the game. I'm still kicking myself about that one.

The game-play is the same as always. Slick controls that have not changed a bit. But that's a good thing in my book. I would have been kind of upset since the controls have been exactly the same since Pro-Skater 1. The game is a bit easy for someone like myself who's been playing them since forever, but you can change the difficulty level if you wish. There are three: Easy, Normal, and Sick.

Overall I give the game a 92/100

"But why so low Tom?"
-Same old sounds
-Not-that-great textures
-A bit too easy

"But why so high Tom?"
-The best Tony Hawk game yet
-Interesting story that keeps you involved
-Great character models
-Humorous when it means to be

"Oh, you're going to give him a sack of money to keep him happy?" "Well, this isn't money. But it is green and it will keep him happy!"

Good for: 20+ hours. More online.

Just an update on the Classic Games

For those of you who want to read classic game reviews, here's how you can! Every classic game review ends with the system it's for (eg: "Crystalis for NES"). So head to the Game Review Index and look for the games that have been added. They're mixed in and we still haven't decided if we're going to change that or how we would change that. But we have moved 6 games (so far) from the old TK Emulation site over, so please give the reviews a read and (as always) provide us with some feedback on the Forums. Thanks!

Little Fighters 2 and Classic Game Reviews

I've added Little Fighters 2 to the Free Online Gamelist. This game has been around for awhile and I think it's dead as far as development. But you can still download it and play online with a friend. Possibly more than one friend, I haven't attempted anymore than one because even with my cable Internet and his DSL Internet, the lag was pretty bad. Just barely playable. You can also get Little Fighters 1 from the same website.

The game is really fun, the best way I can think of describing it is "River City Ransom with magic on crack". Yeah that about sums it up. And if you haven't played River City Ransom, I suggest getting yourself an NES emulator and the rom for it, because you're missing out.

Speaking of classic games, you may have noticed in the games section that a new area has arrived, titled "Classic Game Reviews". You may have also noticed that it's empty at the moment. Here we will bring you reviews of (you guessed it) classic games from classic consoles and arcade machines. Since TK Emulation has been taken down, I'm going to move all of our reviews over. Pretty soon you'll see that section injected with a bunch of content.

Enjoy!

Free Ragnarok Online

Feel like playing Ragnarok Online? Don't want to pay for a "crappy 2D anime sprite over 3D world*" game? Get onto a private server! Many of them can be found here. But my personal favorite would be #2 on the list, EuphRO. My name is "Spyder" on there, look me up.

"How does this work?" Well it's pretty simple. You download the Korean versions of Ragnarok and Sackray (the Ragnarok expansion) and then download the server software from the site. Install it all, patch it all, log in.

"Why the Korean version?" I'm not 100% sure, but I bet you it's to avoid the international copyright laws that the international version is sure to have. On EuphRO's website you can find torrents for both RO and Sackray. It's quite the time investment, but it can be rewarding.

Hope you enjoy, I know I am!
